High Functioning Team
The marks of a high functioning interdisciplinary team include:
From Leadership:
- Support and mandate that each discipline be strong and well recognized for its unique skills
and abilities.
- Facilitate effective "negotiation" among team members
- Provide well defined organizational structure
- Provide consistent forum for planning and decision making with each other
- Ensure opportunities for team to review clinical situations and to identify what worked well and opportunities to improve (clinical case presentations and reviews).
- Encourage spirit of inquiry and acquisition of new knowledge within team
- Communicate "respect" in all interactions, decisions, and responses
From Team Members:
- Commit to team success ("whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts")
- Commit to learn from new and senior members of the team as well as to "mentor" and "teach" others.
- Have a good internal locus of control-that is, a sense of personal mastery of skills
- Develop ones own professional discipline's body of knowledge, talent and skill
- Understand the meaning of suffering from many diverse perspectives
