To realize the vision that San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care (SDHPC) would be a local, national and international leader in “education and research in the art and science of palliative care,” the Center for Palliative Studies (CPS) was established in 1989 with a $1.135 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation. True Ryndes was the first director.

By the End of 2003
CPS had grown to be the largest hospice and palliative care education and research facility of its kind. The faculty and staff have many academic accomplishments to be proud of:          (% increases that follow are compared with 2002 data)

Affiliations
Established multiple teaching and research affiliations. During 2003 there were 39 ongoing educational contracts and 14 one-time contracts with various institutions of higher learning.

Professional Education
Provided 60,970 curriculum hours (95% increase) to 831 health care professionals in training (a 51% increase over 2002), including:                Read more . . .

  • 445 nursing students (178% increase)
  • 188 medical students
  •   89 interns, residents and fellows
  •   20 bereavement interns
  •   18 integrative palliative medicine practitioners, eg, acupuncture, massage, music therapy
  •   18 visitors, visiting scholars, scholars in residence
  •   10 dietary interns
  •     6 social work students
  •     1 pharmacy student

    Palliative Medicine Fellowships
    Graduated 4 and matriculated 6 palliative medicine fellows – physicians who spend 1-2 years at SDHPC training to be subspecialists in hospice and palliative medicine

  • 1040 hours for our Tuesday and Thursday noon conferences
  • 114 hours to visiting physicians
